Every year, immediately following Easter, Parliament opened session and the most powerful members of British Society flocked to London for four months. The men were powerful in that they spent this time running the country, making alliances, and propelling their careers, while the women spent this time running Society and setting trends, ideals, and standards for the rest of society.
The Season was a time to have fun: after all, one had eight months of the year to sit around at home. It was a string of annual events, interspersed with a plethora of lavish parties, receptions, and balls. Each day followed its own strict calendar, with "a reasonable choice of options, either to suit individual tastes and ages or to meet particular circumstances."
